In this second round match in the ECB u15 Cup, St James opened their attack with their two County spinners, George Taylor and Jason Hong, and Ansty’s openers, Jonathan Crickmore and James Wright, were forced to proceed cautiously during these early overs. Having seen off, Hong and Taylor, they moved though the gears in a partnership of 66 before Wright holed out to the covers off Will Nicholls-Rose for 29. This brought to the wicket Chris Barnes who, in no time, raced to a magnificent half century with a dazzling display of clean hitting to take Ansty to a formidable total of 148 for 1 off their 20 overs. Crickmore carried his bat for 49, falling just short of his own half century which he would have richly deserved.
With a mountain to climb, St James’s openers, Taylor and Gibbs started aggressively and were well up on the pace before they both fell to fine deliveries from Alex Borley who immediately then accounted for John Glover in a match turning spell. Hong set about rebuilding the innings for St James with an intelligent 38 but the damage was done and, after he fell to Wright, the game was over as a contest and St James subsided to 117 all out, leaving Ansty victorious by 31 runs.
