Brighton & Hove v Ansty

We knew this match would be a difficult one, they always are against Brighton & Hove but we didn’t think it’d go right down to the last ball. Ansty got off to a steady but slow start as the opening Brighton & Hove bowlers started with 2 maiden overs, however once these bowlers had finished James Smethurst & Dominic Stone soon set the standard batting strongly & quickly & retired on 26 & 28 respectively. Alex Bennett came on next & was joined at the crease by Jack Palser who was replaced by Charlie Jeyes when he was caught out. Bennett retired on 27. Jeyes batted superbly scoring the only 6 of the match & also retired on 25. Callum Middleton & Jack Erritt finished the game both not out. Ansty’s total was 137.
Brighton & Hove’s innings got off to a poor start when Smethurst got 2 wickets ,1 an excellent catch by Sam Gregory, in the opening over. Just what we wanted! Brighton & Hove soon fought back & scored quickly their next batsman retiring on 28.Some excellent fielding manufactured a run out by Callum Middleton our wickie off Matthew Hollis’ bowling, but Brighton & Hove continued to chip away at our total with some really good running between the wickets. The next wicket fell to Bennett & another Brighton & hove player retired & suddenly we were in the last over with Brighton & Hove needing 11 runs to win. Smethurst bowled excellently& we got a run out off his second ball. A bit of sloppy fielding gave Brighton & Hove a glimmer of hope, the pressure telling on the fielders, but Smethurst dot balled the last but 1 ball of the over meaning they needed a 4 to draw. Fortunately Ansty’s fielders kept it together & we won the match by 1 run. An excellent match played in good spirit by both sides.
