Saturday 26th May 2007 Pulborough v Ansty U10 Identilam League (at Pulborough) On a cold, damp May Bank Holiday Saturday, Ansty U10 bowlers turned on the heat at Pulborough’s home ground in Watersfield, securing a win by 23 hard fought runs. Captained by Theo Welch, Ansty lost the toss and were asked to bat on a pitch heavy with overnight dew and rain. Ben Grose offered early encouragement with some good play making and his good start was further consolidated by Reardon Palmer, a 260 total looked on the cards. But with a very low bouncing pitch and a super slow outfield Ansty Colts became bogged down. With the usually dependable batsmen of Theo Welch and Tom Gregory miss timing, a total of 224 after 20 overs did not look good enough. After a strong team talk at the change over, the boys were determined to defend their total and defend it they did. Tom Gregory opened the bowling and set the standard with a superb over of tight pacey bowling. This was equalled by Theo Welch, Ben Grose, Jack Pearce and Jacob Turner, all managing to combine pace with accuracy, with Jack Pearce bowling a wicket maiden. After 6 overs Ansty had given away only three runs (including all extras) and taken two wickets. Jack Pearce then took a truly outstanding catch, taking a fizzing ball at full pace at square leg. Tom Gregory continued this excellent fielding by hitting the stumps three times from the boundary and Jonathan Shoesmith kept the heat up with some quick fielding and an accurate throw over the stumps for a good run out. Reardon Palmer kept wicket and did much to add fuel to the fire that kept Pulboroughs total down to 201 after their 20 overs. Top wicket takers were Jacob Turner & Tom Gregory who both took two wickets for three runs but the entire team put in a fantastic bowling performance. If Ansty can learn some more patience when batting, they should prove to be a hard team to beat in the Identilam league.
