Ansty squeezed into the Sussex Group semi-finals by the narrowest margins in an enthralling contest at Alfriston. Ansty set a target of 182 for 7 off their 40 overs, which looked highly unlikely at the half-way stage with them on just 58 for 2 at 20 overs. Skipper Tom Freeman (39) and Dan Belfort (a cameo 31 off just 19 deliveries) helped push a further 124 off the final 20 overs with Rob Littlejohns striking 15. Earlier, Ansty had put on 44 for the opening stand before losing both openers Ross Chisholm (18) and Tom Benham (15). Paul Osborn struck 20 before being caught in the deep. Nick Beechey took 2 for 50 for the hosts, but the most economical bowler was Tim Hurst’s 9 overs, costing just 9 runs with a wicket. In reply, Alfriston started cautiously with James Austin making 20. After losing both openers, the home side produced a superb third wicket partnership of 78 between Matt Harmer and Beechey (30). James Nutter was recalled into the attack and started taking wickets, but Harmer was letting loose with wonderful hits to pass his half-century. With an over to go, needing six to win, Nutter bowled Harmer first ball to claim his fifth wicket and Alfriston’s hopes of victory fell with him. The home side scrambled four further runs, but finished two runs short to give Ansty a one-run victory. James Nutter finished with figures of 5 for 52 and Harmer scored 86 which included 9 fours and 2 sixes.
